Winter has arrived, bringing along some unpredictable weather. To keep your car running smoothly and ensure that you and your passengers stay safe on the road, it’s super important to winterize your vehicle. Check out these easy steps to get your car all set for the season and dodge those pesky cold-weather breakdowns!.

1. Check Your Battery

An old or weak battery may fail to start your car in freezing temperatures.

  • Inspect the battery: Look for any corrosion around the battery terminals.
  • Test the battery: If your battery is more than 3 years old, have it tested at LMN Auto & Tire shop to ensure it’s holding a charge.
  • Replace if needed: If the battery is nearing the end of its life, replace it before the cold snap hits.

2. Replace Wiper Blades and Refill Washer Fluid.

Visibility is crucial during winter time, and snow and rain, can quickly reduce how clearly you can see the road.

  • Replace wiper blades: Winter-specific blades are designed to handle snow and ice more effectively than regular wiper blades.
  • Refill wiper fluid: Use a winter-grade windshield washer fluid that won’t freeze in cold temperatures.

3. Inspect your tires.

Tires are the only point of contact between your car and the road. In winter conditions, having the right tires can make all the difference.

  • Check tire pressure: Cold weather can cause tire pressure to drop. Check your tire pressure regularly and inflate them to the manufacturer’s recommended levels.
  • Examine tread depth: If your tires are worn down, replace them. For those living in snow-prone areas, investing in winter tires is highly recommended for better traction in snow and ice.
  • Consider snow tires: Snow tires have specialized treads that provide extra grip on slippery roads.

4. Check and Top off Fluids.

Proper fluid levels and conditions are crucial to your car's performance during winter months.

  • Coolant/antifreeze: Ensure your coolant is at the correct level and has the right antifreeze mixture (typically a 50/50 ratio of antifreeze and water). This helps prevent your engine from freezing.
  • Oil: Cold weather can make thicker oil more difficult to circulate. Consider switching to a thinner oil if your current oil is too viscous for colder temperatures.
  • Brake fluid: Low or dirty brake fluid can affect your car’s stopping power, especially in winter when roads are slippery.

5. Test your Heating and Defrosting Systems.

A well-functioning heater and defroster are essential for comfort and safety.

  • Check the heater: Make sure it blows warm air and works effectively. If it’s not working, it could be a sign of a larger issue that needs attention.
  • Test the defroster: Both your front and rear defrosters should be in working condition. This is essential for clearing fog or frost from your windshield during winter driving.
Regular checks can prevent costly repairs & keep you safer on slippery roads!

6. Check your Lights.

With short days and more inclement weather, your headlights and other lights are critical for visibility.

  • Inspect all lights (headlights, brake lights, turn signals, fog lights, etc.) to ensure they’re working.
  • Replace any burned-out bulbs.
  • Clean your headlights: Dirt and grime can dim the light output, so be sure to clean your headlights regularly.

7. Keep Your Gas Tank Half Full.

During winter, keeping your gas tank at least half full is recommended to avoid running out of fuel and prevent moisture from freezing in the fuel lines.

8. Check the Exhaust System.

A damaged exhaust system can be dangerous in the winter months, especially if there's a blockage that causes harmful gases to enter the car cabin.
  • Inspect the exhaust system for any signs of damage, leaks, or blockages.

9. Prevent Winter salt from causing damage.

Salt from road treatments can cause long-term damage to your car's paint and undercarriage. Make sure to protect your car from the corrosive effects of salt.

  • Wash your car regularly during the winter to remove salt buildup, road grime, and other contaminants.
  • Wax your car: Apply a layer of wax to protect your car’s paint and make it easier to remove ice and snow.
  • Protect the undercarriage: An undercarriage wash can help prevent rust and corrosion from road salt.

Bonus Tip: Drive Cautiously in Winter Weather.

Winter driving comes with its own set of challenges, so it's essential to adjust your driving habits:

  • Reduce speed in snow, ice, and foggy conditions.
  • Increase your following distance to give yourself more time to react.
  • Be extra cautious on bridges and overpasses, as they freeze faster than regular roads.
